Julien School for Alternative Learners
” The standards set in this school are ones of excellence. They know the kids are capable of greatness and lovingly and consistently instill that confidence. This school is a home away from home for your children, meaning that if you want a trustworthy teaching environment, where it’s evident that those on board truly care for your children, then this is the place. At a recent grad party, there was a moment where it was like being at a family party/gathering, from the kids happy running around playing together, the music being playing and food that was prepared and served with love 💕. Those moments extended to the every day environment at Africentric also. As a parent of a child who attended here, thankyou Africentric for the best schooling experience I’ve ever been a part of. Parents are kept in the loop and invited to be a part of the schooling experience be it through clear communication of school news from the Principle, or weekly assemblies for the kids and family, or the countless events they always have arranged. From what I saw they are very accomodating to students religious beliefs and careful of any dietary preferences. I feel they truly welcome and meet you where you’re at and are very accomodating and understanding of lifes experiences/ what goes on outside of school hours. This school and team deliver culturally specific, highly competent, care and teaching alongside TDSB standard curriculum to families in the African diaspora. Whilst my child was in attendance I saw it to be an affirming environment and one that encourages self confidence. Be it from the positive affirmations surrounding a healthy identity, decorated into the classrooms or the educational images and displays about various hair types and styles, as well as the representation being shown everywhere you turn.. from books to media, guest speakers and importantly from teachers too, Africentric is a healthy, balanced learning environment. Highly recommend Africentic Alternative school. Additionally in response to the review calling this institute racist, they ABSOLUTELY are not. I’ve seen non Black parents of Black biracial/multiracial children welcomed with no prejudice, anyway even if there were non, nada, zero non Black ppl present… 📢📢📢 culturally specific spaces are NOT racist 📢📢📢. Anytime there’s anti colonial work being done for EQUITY someone who is against it gets loud. Excellent work Africentric, may there be many many more Africentric institutions to come. 💛 “
” My daughter is currently attending their JK program and I must say, I love her teachers, the environment is very powerful for the children, reinforcing principals taught at home. Although I have separation anxiety at times, I feel good knowing my child is learning in the most capable of hands. “
” An inspiring, diligent and authentic learning environment. Providing Black youth a sense of identify whilst the tools to develop the necessary skills to navigate the academic world (secondary and post secondary) and the outside world. Thank you to the faculty for your groundbreaking work and shout out to the students/parents. Don’t let those who have no sense of self identity and no awareness/basic understanding of *EQUITY* tell you that the this is “segregation” or whatever ill-informed ramble they come up with. Power to y’all. “
