Somerset Academy
” I was diagnosed with a learning disability as a child and went to Somerset to get help learning. The Director at the time (Maureen Van Loon) decided to put me a year behind. She thought it would help me as I struggling to learn in particular with areas such as reading comprehension. This did not end up helping me. It only caused a lifetime of trauma for learning along with a lack of respect from my peers while growing up. While at the school, the policy was to have students learn at an accelerated rate, which meant learning a year ahead. So I was a grade behind but still learning the curriculum of the year I was supposed to be in. I don’t feel that the situation was handled well by the director while I attended Somerset. When returning to the public system, I continued to struggle and was far behind other students. I became a straight D student throughout high school and failed the OSSLT twice. So much for being prepared for the future. While in college, I finally overcame my reading comprehension challenge. A classmate of mine who had dyslexia was able to teach me strategies for reading with my learning capabilities. It was to read something and then drawing it out to help understand. I am a visual learner who just needed a different approach to learning. The end results is, I still learn the same way with same challenges and going to this school never helped this. “
