” The Shire has been a great experience for our grade 6 child. Our family is half Chinese and we don’t use Chinese that much at home. We also used to live in Japan, where he learned Chinese only after school. Coming to Toronto almost 3 years ago, he has been in the care of the excellent teachers (the English and Chinese and Spanish ones) who teach at the Shire. He gets to use Mandarin daily, both in terms of time (half of each day) and application (using it in math and other subjects, not just as language study). Even though our household is not Mandarin speaking, it’s been gratifying to see his Mandarin improve regardless. Aside from Mandarin, the Shire has also stepped up in making our son develop over all academically – he gets to study harder materials in the subjects he likes, and gets individual attention in the areas he needs improvement. The class size and loving environment really contributed to his overall development. We couldn’t be happier with the school. “

She is being exposed to 3 languages (English, Mandarin and Spanish) from 4-5 teachers daily, which helps her learn to adapt to different teaching styles and to become a global citizen. Since it’s a close-knit school, older kids tend to look after the younger ones. The school’s location is also ideal for children to explore the city with many museums, parks and UofT nearby. “

The small class sizes mean my daughter is receiving a lot of specialized attention, and they know when they can push and challenge her. She is learning an impressive amount of Mandarin and whenever I listen to her speak it, I get a giddy smile on my face. My husband and I don’t speak the language so all the Mandarin she’s learned is thanks to the Shire!
